The article explores the concept of megalopolis conceived by social scientist Jean Gottmann in 1957 and the idea of megalopolis according to John Rennie Short in his 2007 book "Liquid City: Megalopolis and the Contemporary Northeast." It discusses the eastern seaboard of the U.S., from Washington to Boston which Gottmann declared as the 20th century version of the megalopolis of the ancient Greeks. Some of the factors that devastated the BosWash megalopolis include urban rioting, closure and migration of factories and the decline in industrial economy.
