ABSTRACT
This article explains that in response to federal incentives and global warming, U.S. utilities are moving toward ordering their first new reactors since Three Mile Island's meltdown of 1979. A handful of electric power companies are poised to submit applications to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission this fall to begin building and operating the next generation of nuclear power plants. However, nuclear power plant officials say that their industry alone needs $20 billion to $25 billion in guarantees in fiscal 2008 to launch a new generation of reactors.
