ABSTRACT
This article reports on the rising incidence of type 1 diabetes in very young children. Type 1 diabetes mellitus continues to increase with an estimated rate of between 3 percent ad 5 percent annually. Oxford data suggests that about 4 percent of children with type 1 diabetes are less than 2 years of age at diagnosis. Thus, it is important for diabetes health professionals in training to have exposure and experience to very young children with diabetes. The knowledge that diabetes is linked with a shortened lifespan of up to 15 years becomes even more important for children diagnosed at such an early age.
