ABSTRACT
This article discusses the validity of open telephony based in Session Initiation Protocol and Voice over Internet Protocol, and whether or not this technology can be useful in business enterprises. It discusses the use of such technologies in colleges and universities. The article describes the different facets of Session Initiation Protocol telephony, including its flexibility and cost, and why it works well for certain enterprises. The basic elements of Internet Protocol architecture, as well as telephony features, are presented. INSET: Open Source And Open Standards--Definitions And Concepts.
