The article looks at celebrities and executives who created news in the U.S. during 1999. John Sarsen, president and CEO of Association of National Advertiser, acknowledged in October at the group's annual conference that the association was officially withdrawing its controversial offer to let ad agencies join. His explanatory comment only served to anger the American Association of Advertising Agencies. The year 1999 is when Oprah Winfrey cemented her position as queen of all media. In addition to keeping up with her appearances on her syndicated television talk show, Winfrey joined Geraldine Laybourne and Mercy Carsey to launch women's television and Internet network Oxygen Media. The winning Women's World Cup soccer kick resulted in U.S. player Brandi Chastain taking her shirt off. As a result, her commercial endorsements took off.
