ABSTRACT
The article offers information on smart drug infusion pumps in the U.S. According to the author, programmable drug libraries are the key element that makes pumps smart. Vanderbilt University Medical Center pharmaceutical services assistant director Mark Sullivan notes that the kind of variation makes implementation of smart pumps a huge project in terms of resources, people and time. The University of Michigan uses Hospira smart pumps because they can be programmed to demand bar-coded drug labels. The key to its success is customized drug libraries based on clinical care areas.
