ABSTRACT
The article highlights a lecture by Graeme Forrest, director of the Antimicrobial Program at University of Maryland Medical Center, at the Healthcare Associated Infections education session during the Premier 2007 Annual Breakthroughs Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida in June 2007. According to Forrest, developing an internal program to prevent the overprescribing of antibiotics will increase effectiveness of the drugs and save health care organizations money. He also offers other considerations when developing an antibiotic management program including developing and standardizing recommendations on antibiotic doses within the health care organization.
