ABSTRACT
The article talks about the implication of a proposal by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) to establish a new hospital wage index system for hospitals in the Northeastern region in the U.S. is implemented. A preliminary analysis prepared for a hospital association found that hospitals in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York would be disproportionately affected if Congress enacted MedPAC's plan. The role of the wage index in Medicare's payment systems is to adjust payments for the differences in wage rates across geographic areas.
