The article reports on a genetic tool-kit being finalized by researchers at the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) that will speed the development of new lupin varieties ideally suited to conditions in Great Britain. It says that lupins had the potential to cut protein import bills and increase the efficiency of nitrogen and potash in arable rotations. Researcher Tony Mizen admits during a demonstration that current imported protein prices made it hard to justify producing lupin grains.
