ABSTRACT
The article discusses the role of law and politics in the desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas from 1954 to 1957. Both supporters and opponents of integration developed justifications for their positions based on the rule of law. Following the announcement of the Brown versus Board of Education ruling, the school board emphasized that the voluntary integration plan was being developed largely out of the need to comply with the law. This reliance upon legalism became absorbed in political considerations in the form of interposition.
