ABSTRACT
The author discusses the need for reliable wireless Internet service. He comments that municipal Wi-Fi systems, which provide broadband Internet access through large networks, have failed. He notes that wire-based communication technology is still more reliable. He discusses hourly usage plans for airport Wi-Fi hot spots from communication companies T-Mobile and AT&T. Broadband Internet users called Foneros have pooled their Internet connections to form the Internet community FON. The author suggests mesh technology will help create cheaper wireless service.
