New shape specification eases design and fabrication of aspheres

The article reports on the development of a shape specification for aspheric lens surface by Greg Forbes,senior scientist at QED Technologies in Rochester, New York. A conic plus a polynomials that consists of a sum of monomial even-power terms represented the radial profile of a rotationally symmetric aspheric surface. Forbes developed a representation based on terms that each consist of a set of polynomials, with each term orthogonal with respect to others.
