ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the uses and demand/supply of caustic soda, including related health and safety concerns. Caustic soda is a versatile alkali that has major uses in the production of chemicals, pulp and paper, alumina, soap and detergents. Demand in Europe remains healthy in 2007, but supply was low at 215,278 tonnes in November, according to Euro Chlor figures. Contact with organic and inorganic chemicals may cause fire or explosions and can be absorbed by inhalation or ingestion.
