ABSTRACT
This article discusses the results of a survey of online retailers conducted by Shop.org which found that Web sales will increase during the 1999 holiday season. According to the survey, online sales jumped 160 percent in third quarter over the same period in 1998. In addition, online retailers' revenue will hit 9 billion dollars during the 1999 holiday season, November 1 through December 31. The survey also found online sales growth will continue to outpace online retailers' marketing efforts in the fourth quarter. Online retailers will spend up to 40 percent of their total advertising budgets during the holiday season, according to the survey. Marketing spending in the third quarter of 1999 has increased 120 percent over the third quarter in 1998, and online retailers are expected to spend at least 120 percent more on advertising in 1999.
