ABSTRACT
The article discusses how cable operators and similar providers can deliver content to high definition televisions. Analog reclamation, switched digital video (SDV), node splitting and MPEG-4 are the four options currently explored by operators to meet the growing consumer demand for HD. The author believes that MPEG 4, among the four options discussed, is the unifying element of the overall bandwidth solution because it works in conjunction with SDV, node splitting and analog reclamation to create the necessary bandwidth to support HD migration. He added that though it is not perfect, the transcoding component, remains the best and most cost-efficient option for cable operators wanting to integrate MPEG-4 into their bandwidth strategy.
