ABSTRACT
The article discusses the implications of forest on stock grazing conversion citing the properties owned by Bruce Luxford, the Lichfield Christian Charitable Trust and Margaret and Ian Elliott in Waikato, New Zealand. The conversion reflects changes in the land use system based on the relative profitability of dairy industries over timber production, with the decline in log prices. The resulting economic advantages of increased exports and job opportunities will nonetheless bring about two major environmental problems namely, reduced water quality due to increased nitrogen, phosphate and particulate matter in rivers and increased carbon dioxide level owing to deforestation. The role of education in improving production on grazed land is important according to the article.
