ABSTRACT
The article deals with the plans of Nasdaq to launch Portal, a computerized trading platform designed to market private placements such as mutual funds and pension funds to institutional investors. The plan is aimed at offering venture capitalists and other private equity players another avenue to liquidity. Portal will create a market in stocks issued under U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's rule 144a, which lets companies sell shares to qualified buyers without government oversight. The computerized system is expected to simplify the process much as it did with trading in public stocks.
