ABSTRACT
The article describes the Beads of Courage program. Established by Jean Baruch at the Children's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona in 2003, the program awards heart-shaped beads of purple lampworked glass to children undergoing cancer treatment. A bead is awarded for each medical or personal milestone over the course of treatment, to help the child develop positive coping strategies and decrease illness-related stress. Twenty-six hospitals and 2,000 children are currently involved in the program.
