ABSTRACT
The article discusses the IP Multimedia Subsystem, or IMS, which has the support of standards such as the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The concept for IMS came from the mobile IP service convergence and spread into the fixed-mobile convergence, as well as pure wireless services. The explanation for how the IMS network works includes signaling via Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Although the idea is controversial due to security and revenue issues, IMS has the potential to add value to voice-over internet protocol (VOIP) applications. The market for IMS could take a decade to develop to the point of being ubiquitous.
