ABSTRACT
The article offers a look at the transformation of the human resource (HR) department of Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland. It is the leading bank in Northern Ireland and number three in the republic. On top of this, Ulster Bank was what HR director Ray Gammell describes as a very traditional bank, with a sense of pride and history. Gammell and his team had to make the structures work and transform levels of engagement and performance to meet the bank's goal to become Ireland's number one bank.
