ABSTRACT
The article discusses research on whether the after hours clinical support enrolled nurse or AH EN is exhibiting clinical skill extension in the acute surgical area in a hospital in Sydney, New South Wales. Enrolled nurses working after hours in an extended support role were studied. Findings showed that the AH ENs were performing routine nursing activities, and extended skills were seldom performed. The article suggests that basic nursing practices be assigned to assistants to enable AH ENs to assist registered nurses and extend their own practice.
