ABSTRACT
The article presents a study which examines whether communication strategy and brochures could lessen the burden of bereavement of relatives of patients who are dying in the intensive care unit. Results revealed that family members in the proactive communication group had lower Impact of Event Scale scores than those in the standard communication group. It is concluded that a proactive communication strategy reduces symptoms of postraumatic stress disorder.
