ABSTRACT
The article discusses the relationship of music and painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many artists attempted to replicate qualities of composer Richard Wagner's music including the emotional force and the ability to command sustained attention. Henri Fantin-Latour's realist painting "Around the Piano," from 1885, is one example of many compositions that depicted people listening to music. The author also discusses how music plays a role in symbolist and abstract works of art.
