ABSTRACT
The article provides information on the proposal to construct a pipeline that will take groundwater from the Big Chino sub-basin and discusses its effect on Verde River in Prescott, Arizona. The planned construction is strongly opposed by the residents believing that the pipeline would lower the water table and dry up the Verde River's first 25 miles, thus, reducing the flows down the river. It also triggered threats of lawsuits from both the Center for Biological Diversity and the Salt River Project, a utility company that gets 30 to 40% of its surface water from Verde. According to the author, for the pipeline to be completed, its backers must prove to the state that the wells that feed the lines will tap to an assured 100-year water supply.
