ABSTRACT
The article profiles Cristian Samper, acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Samper brings to the post a background as a biologist specializing in the cloud forests of the Andes. Samper established natures reserves in Colombia, directed Colombia's biodiversity research institute, and helped craft the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Samper joined the Smithsonian in 2001 as deputy director of its Tropical Research Institute in Panama, then moved to Washington D.C. to direct the National Museum of Natural History. Samper is expected to serve as acting director for up to a year.
