ABSTRACT
The article presents information on social aspects of middle-school education in the United States, with a focus on bullying, as of 2007. The authors note that the majority of bullying is connected to diversity from established norms, and that community acceptance of diversity is necessary in order to reduce bullying. Based on the authors' 2006 survey of students' experiences with physical, verbal, and relational bullying in a variety of middle-school school settings with varying demographics, they report on typical bullying locations, students reasons for and reactions to bullying, and adult responses, which were reported to be inadequate. The authors present suggestions for a schoolwide approach to preventing bullying.
