ABSTRACT
This article analyzes the value of real estate investment trust, REIT. Deciding whether to invest in REITs or financial assets may involve a decision that is not needed to make. The idea is not to avoid stocks and bonds in favor of REITs but to add REITs to a portfolio when appropriate. Despite the dismal performance of the past years, REITs can add diversification, inflation protection and income stability to a portfolio. Planners wishing to add individual REITs to a portfolio can select those companies most compatible with client objectives; however, stock selection requires considerable due diligence. Those who lack the time to acquire the knowledge necessary to conduct that due diligence will probably be more comfortable with one of several excellent mutual funds specializing in REIT shares.
