The article discusses the prevalence of short code mobile initiative in the U.S. Short codes are administered by NeuStar, which operated the Common Short Code Registry. To get a code, marketers need to fill out an application which will indicate the purpose of using the code along with a $1,000 leasing fee and $500 a month for a random code. Several businesses use short codes in promoting a service or for contests. Short codes can also make information search easier.
