The article reports on the plan of the European Commission to establish plans for a European Research Area (ERA). The purposes of the ERA are to improve the mobility of researchers in member states and to lessen the duplication and fragmentation of research projects. Around 50% of them work in the business sector in Europe, compared with nearly 70% in Japan and 80% in the U.S.
