ABSTRACT
The article features Amy Berman of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Berman launched The Mother Bear project in 2003 after she read an article about children who had acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Africa. Her mother gave her the pattern and a refresher course in knitting. Soon, she was teaching others how to knit the bears. Each bear is unique, but they all feature an appliquéd felt heart. The Project has sent some 14,000 bears to 12 African countries.
