ABSTRACT
The article presents information on open fractures and its complications. Open fractures are the result of high-energy trauma and always associated with a soft-tissue injury. These fractures should never be closed primarily due to the risk of gas gangrene. The rate of infection of open fractures is related with the antibiotic therapy variables, fracture characteristics, and host parameters.
