ABSTRACT
The article reports that film studio Toho filed a copyright infringement suit against Cosmo Contents, a digital versatile disc (DVD) sales company, at the District Court in Tokyo, Japan. Toho stated that Cosmo has been selling DVD copies of eight films by director Akira Kurosawa, for which it has copyright. Toho argues that pre-1971 law in Japan gives them copyright to Kurosawa's films until 2036. Cosmo claims that post-1971 law gives it right to distribute films released 50 years ago.
