ABSTRACT
This article discusses the efforts of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to combat deception in the advertising of long-distance telephone companies as of November 1999. FCC chairman Bill Kennard claimed that consumers were complaining about the savings promised by the advertisements. These advertisements promised savings but failed to draw attention to their fine prints, which posted limitations and hidden costs for the consumers. Kennard issued a warning to the companies, asking them to rectify the situation if the FCC will do it for them.
