The article focuses on the author's experience of visiting Fengdu in China. The author reflects on the destruction of the place to build the Three Gorges Dam. She describes the place as having wrecked buildings and apartment buildings torn down. She also presents a picture of the people who have had their land taken away by the Communist government and concludes that they are the source of hope that Fengdu cannot be easily destroyed.
