ABSTRACT
The article examines the prospects for the television broadcast networks' nightly news programs. The ratings gains made by ABC since Charles Gibson became their anchorman are noted, as is the failure of CBS to gain since Katie Couric became their anchorperson. The stagnant but significant audience for the three broadcasts is reported. It speculates broad changes in format, such as a switch to the Internet, may be necessary to increase the number of viewers.
