ABSTRACT
The article examines the decision of Belgium-based Solvay, a producer of vinyls and vinyl products, soda ash, specialties and pharmaceuticals, to focus more on the latter rather than commodities. The company revealed lower than expected fourth-quarter financial results in February 2007. The author believes that growing the pharmaceutical business of Solvay is essential but not to the detriment of its drive into specialties and new geographical areas.
