ABSTRACT
The article discusses the approach used by Japan's chemical industry to be able to cope with the international market. The industry has been struggling to compete with companies in China and the Middle East that enjoy lower costs. After years of reinventing themselves, Japanese chemical companies realised that they should focus on niche markets to boost profitability. For example, Toray Industries has invested in the production of carbon fibre products to supply the booming aircraft industry.
