This article explores the historicity of production of folk songs in print media as broadside ballads. According to the author, ballads were one of the earliest products of press and also among the largest class of printed materials. In 1612, the printing of ballads became the exclusive right of five printers, and in 1624, a syndicate called "ballad partners" was formed. This led to the stationers becoming "custodians of tradition."
