ABSTRACT
The article reports that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is leading an effort to sign a free trade agreement between the European Union and countries in the Gulf. The UAE Minister of Economy, Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi told the Gulf News newspaper that both Peter Mandelson, the European trade commissioner, and German chancellor Angela Merkel were hopeful that a pact would be signed sooner rather than later.
