The article reports on the claim of California-based Spectrolab Inc. (SI) that its concentrator solar cell had a record efficiency of 40.7 percent. SI president David Lillington said that this solar cell performance was the highest efficiency level achieved by any photovoltaic device. The results were encouraging since they were achieved using a novel class of metamorphic semiconductor materials.

Multi-junction (MJ) solar cells performance under concentrated illumination is analyzed. Ray-tracing simulations have been used to obtain light profiles produced by different optical systems, and these profiles have been transferred to masks. By masking the photovoltaic device, solar cell...

The hot-carrier solar cell (HC-SC) is an ambitious approach to solar energy conversion which in principle can achieve high efficiency (84%) from a single bandgap semiconductor. Here we propose a method of utilising hot-carriers within a photovoltaic device in which energy is extracted optically...

Vertically aligned CdTe nanorods were fabricated by electrodeposition and were applied for the active layer of solar cells after being combined with poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT), a conjugated polymer. The electrodeposited CdTe showed an n-type behavior with the electric resistivity and the...

Recently, Cd-free Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2-based “CIGSSe” thin film solar cells with a nominal In2S3 buffer layer deposited by the spray ion layer gas reaction technique resulted in photovoltaic performances comparable to that of CdS buffered references. In the past it was argued that...
