This article reports on the success of The Sporting News, a magazine which has been published for over a century in the U.S., as of October 1999. Advertising sales are up and advertisers are reaping benefits by getting better deals. The magazine especially known for its preponderance of statistics has been put on the block by owner Times Mirror. The reason is that Times Mirror is a newspaper company ill-equipped to develop the cable or broadcast TV resources needed by The Sporting News to compete in an aggressively multimedia age.
