ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the study to document the first female graduates of the University of Louisville School of Medicine (ULMD). According to the author, the role of women in medicine was debated as the medical education began to gain a foothold in the U.S. during the 19th century. By 1986, there were about 12 female physicians in Louisville wherein only few were educated locally at the Louisville National Medical College and Southwestern Homeopathic Medical College. Lack of photographic evidence and changing of names due to marriage were some of the difficulties faced by researchers. In 1903, Laura Burton finished the program at ULMD wherein she was listed as Laura C. Bartee wherein Bartee was her first husband's last name.
