The article focuses on the history the flying unit Lafayette Escadrille as depicted in its insignia. The insignia bears the image of a screaming Lakota Sioux chief. The flying unit consisted of U.S. volunteers who enlisted in the French Foreign Legion to fight against Germany. The Lafayette Escadrille had launched 3,000 missions and had 37 aerial victories. It was founded on April 16, 1916 and was disbanded on February 18, 1918.
