ABSTRACT
The article reports on the opposition of a group of Arizona park and refuge managers, wildlife biologists and conservationists to the building of a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border. According to them, the wall, designed to keep illegal immigrants and drug smugglers out of the U.S., will fragment the Sonoran Desert ecosystem, damage the desert's plant and animal communities and prevent the free movement of wildlife between the U.S. and Mexico. A symposium on border ecology in Tucson, Arizona, sponsored by Defenders of Wildlife and the Wildlands Project, has helped refocus attention on the proposed wall's biological effects.
