ABSTRACT
The article examines the lending record of the Gray Library in Haddington, Scotland from the early eighteenth century through to the early nineteenth century. It discusses Scottish reading in the Enlightenment context and its impact on other parts of the society. A background to the foundation of the Gray Library is provided. The two important factors contributing to the use of the library are also cited.
