The article discusses the effects of political dissatisfaction on consumer spending in the United States. Though public opinion of United States President George W. Bush's military policy and the war on Iraq was extremely low in 2006, consumer spending was fairly high. The author suggests that this spending is a result of anxiety, an effort to relieve angst that has built up as consumers worry about politics, the economy, their personal finances, and growing old, which studies say is the average consumer's biggest fear.
