A definition of the term "ATR," which stands for ataxia telangiectasia is presented. ATR together with Rad3-related acronyms for a checkpoint kinase that is homologous to the ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein mutated in Ataxia telangiectasia and the yeast RAD3 kinase is presented. It explains that activation ATR is a proximal step in the cellular mechanisms that sense and signal DNA damage.

Ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM), ataxia-telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) and DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs) are members of the phosphoinositide-3-kinase-related protein kinase (PIKK) family, and are rapidly activated in response to DNA damage. ATM and DNA-PKcs...

A definition of the term "ATM protein," which is a large protein kinase involved in the control of many signaling pathways to DNA damage is presented. ATM stands for ataxia telangiectasia mutated. It is a master controller protein that exerts its pleiotropic effects via multiple interactions...

A definition of the medical term "Louis-Bar syndrome" is presented. Louis-Bar syndrome refers to the condition of ataxia-telangiectasia. It was named after Denise Louis-Bar, a 20th century Belgian neuropathologist. The definition is from the "Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary," published by...

The Mre11-Rad50-Nbs1 (MRN) complex tethers, processes and signals DNA double-strand breaks, promoting genomic stability. To understand the functional architecture of MRN, we determined the crystal structures of the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Mre11 dimeric catalytic domain alone and in complex...

The gene for ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T:MIM: #208900), ATM, spans about 150~kb of genomic DNA and is composed of 62 coding exons. ATM mutations are found along the entire coding sequence of the gene, without evidence of mutational hot spots. Using DNA as the starting material, we used denaturing...

Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) is an inherited immunodeficiency disorder wherein mutation of the ATM kinase is responsible for the A-T pathogenesis. Although the precise role of ATM in A-T pathogenesis is still unclear, its function in responding to DNA damage has been well established. Here we...

Inherited biallelic mutations of the ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated) gene cause ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare autosomal recessive disorder associated with a high incidence of childhood leukaemias and lymphomas, suggesting that ATM gene alterations may be involved in lymphomagenesis. It is generally thought that the DNA-damage checkpoint kinases, ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and ATM- and Rad3-related (ATR), work independently of one another. Here, we show that ATM and the nuclease activity of meiotic recombination 11 (Mre11) are required for the processing of DNA...
