The article deals with the efforts of Japanese enterprises to develop new applications for electronic paper. Toppan Printing, a 106-year-old Tokyo company better known for printing books and magazines than for tinkering with leading-edge devices. Toppan is the biggest single investor in E Ink. Toppan has invested a quarter of the $140 million that E Ink has garnered. E Ink sends its black-and-white capsules to Toppan, which uses them to manufacture front-panel laminates.
