The article highlights the work force diversity efforts of fire fighting industry for 50 years in the U.S. The efforts to recruit women and people of any race have been marred by resistance from fire fighters who view the fire service as a brotherhood and a tendency by some to regard the fire service as a family business, suitable only for those who have members of the family already on the job. In 2006, some fire departments received unwelcome attention after incidents involving racism.
