The article reports on the alcoholic beverage industry in the U.S. The consumer's desire for affordable luxury is responsible for the huge growth in the super-premium spirits segment over the past decade. Beer sales were up 3 percent in the first half of 2006, but the second half of 2006 is likely to be flat as Labor Day sales were weak and major domestic brewers discounted extensively to drive volume.
